"Reading List"

Spencer Lai
"A smile forms into a grimace mid-slumber as the earth spins— it’s funny, such is the sound of laughter — it is like god’s hands on the shoulders of a troubled world"
31.10.18 — 24.11.18

A reading list of texts, books and articles has been compiled in collaboration with Spencer Lai to accompany their exhibition, 'A smile forms into a grimace mid-slumber as the earth spins— it’s funny, such is the sound of laughter — it is like god’s hands on the shoulders of a troubled world', at Bus Projects as part of the 'With Compliments' series. This resource expands on ideas raised throughout the creation of Spencer’s exhibition, extending the exploration of relationships between artists and their influences across generations and international borders. This reference list explores themes common within Spencer’s practice - the grotesque, identity, gender, sexuality and humor. Also included are texts by the collaborators exhibited within the exhibition; press articles and reviews on Spencer’s previous works; and links to audio/video material that provide reference and further context to the work.
