Ayah Zakout Anau: Tamā’ine
Opening: Wednesday 29th October, 6-8pm Dates: Oct 29 - Dec 6 2025
I said goodnight and that I wanted my land free. I turned every switch in the house off and you blamed it on my OCD. I watched a movie last night and it wasn’t good. I made my first real painting about romance ever. I had za’atar for breakfast and I told my mother not to worry about the week ahead. I finally went to the optometrist. I called my best friend last Thursday. I paced around the dining table and waited for a text from you. I said good morning and you said good morning too, anau.
Anau: Tamā’ine is an extension of Anau, a previous activation venturing the continuation of tradition in the position of a compromised identity.
Ayah Zakout is a Naarm-based visual artist of Palestinian and Polynesian descent (Kūki ‘Airani Māori and Tahitian Mā’ohi), currently situated and practicing on Bunurong/Boonwurrung land.
As a multidisciplinary artist, Ayah ventures both traditional and digital mediums, occasionally combining her ways of working. With a keen focus on text and cross-translation, she pursues a range of subject matters; primarily that of cultural importance and sentiment, to linguistic questioning and reflection regarding their
political identity.
Currently prioritising confessional writing, textile work and archive, Ayah desires to depict what entire self-expression truly entails.
