Paul Malcolm Faint Indeterminacy

Fallacious Fog presents an arrangement of photographic motifs that depict platonic and intimate connections between human beings, to explore the way we use images to mediate important human experiences. In employing low-grade reproductions of appropriated images, this installation intends to counteract the overstimulating methods of presentation perpetuated by screen-based media, critiquing the way contemporary visual culture can be seen to foster lethargic perceptual habits in consumers of digital media, through over exposure to high definition images. In reacquainting the viewer with materially and visually softer iterations of these bonding photographs, the work attempts to delay how quickly a viewer devises an understanding of the perceived narrative, proposing that sometimes in order to see more clearly, the objects before us must become less visible.
Exhibition disclaimer: This work was initially installed with both fabric panels suspended from the same height at the top of the window space. However, due to the nature of working with tangible materials the front panel dropped part way down the exhibition enclosure before opening night. The artist has chosen to leave the work untouched in its suspended descention, in support of any further mishaps or organic interventions that may occur as a result of material agency.
Paul Malcolm has participated in several group exhibitions including graduate shows, Contemporary Art at the Richard Searby Studio in 2017 and Honours 18 at the Phoenix Gallery in 2018, both located at Deakin University, Burwood. His work was also featured in Video Contemporary at Sydney Contemporary Art Fair in 2018.
As an Intern at Burrinja Cultural Centre, Upwey he worked with the Cultural and Creative Development team to plan and execute the Annual Open Studios Exhibition in 2018. His ongoing work at St Josephs College Ferntree Gully fosters a continued relationship with emerging artists in the South East region of Victoria, Australia. Paul recently completed a Masters of Fine Art at RMIT University in Melbourne.
