Exhibits,
Kate Hodgetts Ferris Wheel
Opening: Tuesday 10th June, 6-8pm Dates: 10-28 June 2008My artistic practice is primarily the projected moving image and sound in installation. I work with very minimal and repetitive visual movements and employ the soundtrack as the instigator of emotion. While there is no intended narrative in my work the combination of the sound and visuals creates a hypnotic and emotive environment for the viewer.
With FERRIS WHEEL I wanted to capture the amazing beauty of the industrial construction as well as the anxiety that such a machine creates in many passengers. The work is a single channel image projected on the wall of the gallery in direct confrontation with the viewer. The video is shot from a carriage on a moving Ferris wheel and takes the viewer through the motions of the ride. When taking a ride on a Ferris wheel we instil our trust in a machine. With this work I aim to seduce the viewer with the repetitive motions of the ride and then make them feel captive, anxious and off balance in what quickly becomes a mechanical monster.
