"I’ll like you if you’ll like me"
Maggie Brown

Opening: Wednesday 14 March, 6-8pm
Dates: 14-31 March 2012

‘I’ll like you if you’ll like me’ brings together anxieties that arise from chance encounters in a public space, in the street and also within the gallery space. An exhibition opening is as much an arena for awkward self-display as it is a space for art. It is here that we jostle self-consciously for the accumulation of friends and status, performing the anxious celebration of connection.

Maggie Brown graduated from VCA with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Honours in 2010. Her installation practice combines digital video and private self-referential video performances to explore the friction between our private and social identities, with the anxiety and awkwardness that comes when negotiating social situations and trying to fit in. Her recent work has explored the small fleeting gestures that signal uncertainty and our inner tensions.
