Catalogue essay, by Olivia Poloni.

Janina Green studied printmaking at RMIT and Fine Arts at Melbourne University and discovered a passion for photography when she began a career in art teaching.

She taught herself how to use a 5 x 4 Linhoff camera and made her prints in a home workshop studio. She began hand colouring her black and white prints with photographic dyes which once belonged to a woman who painted Drive-in advertising slides. Apart from the material, mechanical and conceptual qualities of the craft of photography, she has a special interest in the way women see the world and the way they represent it through photography. Her work explores notions of the (female) self today, its construction and mutability through subtle ideological forces in the home and at work.

Janina Green has exhibited extensively, with a survey exhibition at the Centre for Contemporary Photography in 2016. Her work is held in the collections of the National Gallery of Australia, Art Gallery of NSW, National Gallery of Victoria, Art Gallery of South Australia, Monash Gallery of Art and a number of Regional galleries.

Janina Green is represented by M.33, Melbourne.
