Julia Bavyka
Dates: 2022Julia Bavyka is an interdisciplinary artist interested in the intersection of artistic and everyday
research. Her practice is both conceptual and social, focusing on the gallery as a site for dialogue and thinking – beyond modes of representation, to possibilities of being together and experiencing together. Early installations employed text, abstract sculpture and assemblages of vernacular objects to approach social issues around group identity, displacement and bureaucratic cultures, while more recent works use dialogue-based processes to create shared spaces. Born in Petropavlovsk, Kazakhstan, she studied architecture and Theory and Practice of Visual Communication at the University of Kassel and School of Art and Design Kassel, Germany. She lives in Sydney and Berlin and is a member of the non-profit artist and non-artist run initiative Frontyard Projects in Marrickville, Sydney.
