residual heat is an evolving exhibition that explores the expansion of selfhood across time and place, focusing on creation, childhood, maternal ancestry, and the concept of home. It features an interactive rug with inset video, alongside private letters to the artist’s mother from her family in Malaysia.
This intergenerational dialogue delves into emotional legacies and the experiences of yellow women navigating matrescence and parenthood in foreign lands, spanning 32 years (1992-2023). Central to the exhibition is the phrase “帮我” (help me) carved into the rug’s speech bubble, representing a poignant connection between cultural expression and the unspoken feelings left by time and language.
The exhibition also includes Other Tongue 餓 Ghost Kitchen, a collaboration with artist Ruby White and The Physics Room in Ōtautahi, Aotearoa. This project offers nourishing meals that honor birthing and menstruating bodies, providing comfort for those seeking inner healing.
Together, these works present a cosmic triptych of the postpartum state as numerous and complex practices, tied to the artists return to “the other side of life”.
Ruby Chang-Jet White is a Chinese-Malaysian Hakka and European Australian artist who works predominantly with food and ceramics. Using inherited memory: craft and tacit knowledge, to reflect on and explore histories, intimacy and bridging worlds. More recently she has become more focused on how food can be used intentionally to cultivate spiritual and bodily empathy. She became a mother last July.
This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through Creative Australia, its principal arts investment and advisory body.
