Bus Projects Curators Program creates dedicated space within our artistic program to foster ambitious, critically engaged, and experimental projects by curators at all career stages. This Program provides successful applicants with ongoing curatorial, technical and administrative support to realise an exhibition at Bus Projects during our 2018–19 program (July 2018–July 2019). Applicants are encouraged to propose a project that spans multiple galleries and that includes ancillary public programs, events, performances or publishing projects.
WHO CAN APPLY
Bus Projects welcomes applications from individual curators and curatorial collectives at all career stages. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander practitioners are particularly encouraged to apply. Bus Projects favours applications involving the presentation of works that are critical and/or experimental in nature, and that include events, publishing, performances, or ephemeral aspects.
ABOUT BUS PROJECTS
Bus Projects is an Artist-Run organisation dedicated to supporting the critical, conceptual and cross-disciplinary practices of Australian artists, writers and curators. Our programs exist within a dual context: as a physical space housed within a former mid-century English paint factory; and as part of the culturally diverse community of Collingwood, part of the Kulin nations and land of the Wurundjeri people. From this complex position, we produce exhibitions, performances, screenings, workshops, forums, research and publishing. These programs are driven by an artist-centred philosophy that gives primacy to artists decision-making and recognises the need to support the process and presentation of creative works. As such, we work closely with artists throughout the lifecycle of their projects, providing curatorial and technical support.
ABOUT THE SPACE
Bus Projects has five discrete exhibition spaces of varying sizes. Applicants are encouraged to apply for projects that span across multiple galleries, e.g. Gallery 1 and 3, 2 and 5, or the entire space.
Please note that the wall separating Gallery 1 and 3 can be removed to create one large space. Installation documentation of this can be seen here.
We recognise that our operational model contributes to the financial pressures that artists, curators and other art professionals face when establishing their careers. Although rental fees have not been eliminated for this program, successful applicants will be provided with administrative support to source funding for their projects. Timelines will be adjusted based on grant outcomes.
As a guide, gallery costs in 2017 are for four-week exhibitions; and are as follows:

~ Gallery Three — $680
~ Gallery Four — $490
~ Gallery Five — $390
~ Entire Space — $3,230
The Bus Projects's Curators’ Program EOI closes at midnight Sunday 3rd of September, 2017. Applications should be submitted through our online form. After the closing date, a shortlist of applicants will be invited to meet with Bus Projects staff to discuss their project in more detail. Applicants will subsequently be notified in writing of the outcome.
The EOI process has been designed to be as simple as possible. The submission should include:
~ A concise 300-500 word project outline;
~ One A4 page Curriculum Vitae for the curator/s;
~ A draft list of artists, with concise biographies
~ 6-10 images of past curatorial projects and/or of proposed artists work;
~ Samples of arts writing
Please note that artists do not need to be confirmed at this stage of the EOI process.
